Interview with Callan ‘Cock-a-doodle’ Dean |

Callan ‘Cock-a-doodle’ Dean What other hobbies / sports have you done? Have done a bit of everything really. At school I played Basketball and Waterpolo mainly but wasn’t really interested in being competitive (i.e. training as well as playing) until I started Surf lifesaving at university. Had a couple of national U21 titles in Surfboat rowing and made the Wellington 80/80 Rugby team but nothing to write home about. When did you start training at VUW? I started training at VUW half way through my last year at Uni (2002). Was basically looking for a new sport and preferably something challenging. I had a friend who was training at VUW and started going along with him. For the first couple of years I was still heavily involved in other sports so took it pretty socially until after my first couple of fights. What was your first session like? Kickboxers aren’t renowned for having a great memory. I remember skinning my knuckles on the focus mitts though. Why do you train / still train? I often ask myself that same question. I guess it’s the fighting I like rather than the training. Training takes so much time and sacrifice. Getting better is a pretty good reward though. It is always great to see the improvements in yourself. That’s the good thing about this sport – there is always something more to learn and improve on!

What is your favourite thing about training / VUW? Watching everyone else fight – its just great to see peoples personalities come through in their fighting. It is interesting to see how each individual reacts to fighting and how they overcome challenges they encounter in the ring. What is your biggest achievement? Cant think of anything so it must be yet to come. What is the best thing that happened to you since you started training? I like the travel. Flying around the country to fight is pretty cool. Especially since you don’t have to pay for it! What is your fight record / titles (if any)? 15 wins 6 losses (damn Aucklanders) 1 draw NZ TBANZ Super Welterweight Champ (under 70kg) South Pacific WKBF Light Middleweight Champ What are your goals at VUW? Who knows. I’m just enjoying what i’m doing at the moment and am curious to see where it will take me in the future! Is there anything else you would like to add? Its hard being a cock all the time, but I think i’m the man for the job. |
