More confidence, better fitness and great friends are what I have gained from joining VUW

Jason Mataio – Public Servant

I joined VUW, a little less than two years ago, with the intention of losing some weight I had unintentionally put on during my university years. I am now 15kgs lighter and a lot of this can be attributed to the intensity of the training we do.

As the weight dropped off, my fitness and confidence grew. Activities that once were a real struggle when I started, like doing 30 press ups in a row, are more than achievable now. Not only did I begin to look good, I began to feel good because I was continuously surpassing my ever increasing list of personal expectations and goals.

My goals have changed since I started – I want to fight now. The members of the club have been really supportive and helpful in preparing me for this. They are not your stereotypical ‘knock-your-block-off and out-to-hurt-you’ personas that immediately spring to mind when people think about fighters. They are ‘average joes’ like you and me who have a passion for Muay Thai. I am constantly impressed with their demeanour and willingness to help. These attitudes are fostered throughout the club, from beginner to head trainer, and are what make VUW a great place to train.

I have never regretted joining VUW and I doubt you will either.
